Children's Community School is a progressive elementary school (K-6) located in Van Nuys. For over 28 years, CCS has been dedicated to providing a challenging academic environment and a rich arts program that provide children with the tools to get to know themselves as learners. They are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves and their community. As adults, they make choices that reflect their engagement in the world.
CCS believes that education can and should help students be productive citizens in a democracy. The 7 years spent in elementary school should not be spent as vocational training, but rather, as philosopher John Dewey espoused, it should offer children the opportunity to work together, understand the value of compromise, take an active role their world and be given the message that school is about real life, not something that gets in the way of real life.
CCS is an independent school of about 100 students and the admissions deadline is February 1. Tours take place on Wednesday mornings and are by appointment only.
